Books and Seminars
Can’t I just read a book or attend a seminar and learn what I need to know to get out of debt?
Personal finance and related services are a multi-billion dollar industry in the United States. There are thousands of books and classes available that absolutely will teach you exactly how to get out of debt. If the information is so readily available, why do people have such a hard time getting out of debt? The answer is simple, spending is emotional. Personal finance is more about personal than it is about finance. For most people the barrier that is preventing them from reaching their financial goals is not knowledge or understanding, it’s discipline and follow through.
All the financial self-help books and classes in the world will not get you out of debt. Immediately after being exposed to the material, if it’s good material, you’ll feel motivated to modify your financial behavior for a brief period of time. A brief period of time. Then, if you’re like most people, you’ll fall back into your old habits. The success rate of people who read books or attend seminars or even pay for coaching, is very low. The cost of this advice can range from free, to tens of dollars, to tens of thousands of dollars depending on the program you choose. Before entering a self-help program be sure you understand what you’re getting and what you are not.
If financial books and seminars don’t work, what will?
The process of improving your financial health is actually very similar to the process of improving your physical health. Most people know they need to eat more healthy food and find ways to incorporate daily exercise into their lives. Even though we all know what to do, America is still one of the most unhealthy and overweight countries in the world. Getting physically fit requires an unwavering discipline that most people simply have a hard time accomplishing. However, if you were to hire a personal trainer to workout with you on a regular basis, and a nutritionist to prepare all of your meals, it’s very likely that you will succeed. Why is that? Because the third parties eliminate the failure points. With someone else watching over you and making sure you follow through on your plan, you are more likely to succeed.
Programs like the 9 Year Mortgage Financial Plan not only create a plan for you to follow, but also walk with you every step of the way until you reach your financial goals.
