Monetize a Hobby
What do you love to do? Can you make money doing it?
Everyone loves to do something. The golden question is, do you love doing something that other people are willing to pay for? Even if your hobby is not easy to sell, there are three ways to monetize almost any hobby.
- Sell products and services related to your hobby. This is the most obvious one, just sell what you like to make or do.
- Write a blog about your hobby. If you can write, people will read it. If you can write good, interesting content, then a lot of people will read it. Some will even pay to read it, and if not, related advertisers will pay you to put their ads up on their blog.
- Teach others how to do it. You can do live seminars, one-on-one tutoring, or sell videos or web books that show the secrets of your trade.
Examples of monetizing hobbies
It’s easy to talk about, but read what other people have done to turn their hobbies into cash.
- Firefighting – Check out your local fire department. You’ll be surprised to find it full of nice people that are fun to hang out with. They will provide you with free training and gear, and pay you to take care of your town part time.
- Buy a Backhoe – Haven’t you always wanted to operate a backhoe? Buy or rent one and have at it. Once you get the hang of things you can charge $100 per hour or more to dig holes for people. You may need to get a permit for this one. Don’t want to mess with a backhoe? Try a front end loader, dumptruck, or tow truck.
- Plow snow – If you have a snow cat or 4 wheeler, get a scoop attachment for the front and go clear some driveways. People will pay you $20 to clear the snow and it will take you 5 minutes. And who doesn’t like driving 4 a wheeler?
- Make Music – Do you like to sing or play an instrument? Try getting some solo gigs by offering to play for free at first. Once you get a following you can charge to play. Don’t want to play solo? Consider joining a band.
- Make some crafts – If you like to sew, make pottery, paint, or make other craft projects, try selling them at a local craft consignment shop or fair.
- Cook – Have some recipes that all your friends die for? Start cooking and pedal your goods to local diners or restaurants or get a booth at a local outdoor market.
- Animal Trainer – If you have a knack with animals, be a pet trainer, sitter, or walker.
- Coach Sports – Talk to your local school district about volunteering as an assistant coach and there’s a good chance you’ll land a paying gig before long.
- Handyman – If you’re good at fixing things, put an ad in your local newspaper or online classified ad and charge a reasonable rate. You’ll get some calls, do a good job, and start to get referrals.
- Writing – If you have a literary talent, advertise your writing and editing skills for hire. Plenty of people need help promoting their online blogs and good writers are in demand.
- Photography – Love taking pictures? Get a nice camera, take some pictures of your friends and start building a portfolio. A simple web site can showcase your skills and you can start to attract paying clients.
If none of the ideas above caught your attention, think of what you love to do. Can you sell it? If not will others pay to learn how to do it? How about writing a blog about it? If you put your head down and think about it, you should be able to come up with something you like to do, that will also provide you with some extra cash.
